================= FAMILY PICTURES & STORIES (THREE) =================

 JAN TEN WOLDE  (1854 - 1940)

# JAN TEN WOLDE was one of the four children of WIEBE TEN WOLDE and ALBERTJE KLAASSEN .
Jan was born on September 6 , 1854 in the small town of Steenwijk in the Netherlands .
At he age of ten little Jan already lost his father .
His mother would remarry to a man who happened to have (or wasn't it a coincidence ??) exactly the same familyname as her first husband , so that in daily life possibly a lot of people , erroneously , may have thought that this man was indeed the biological father of all the children ...

Jan ten Wolde , protestant of faith , started earning his living as a carpenter , and at the age of 27 he would be married to JANTJE ZWOLLE , daughter of ROELOF ZWOLLE and GEERTJE PIEST .
The , probably very modest , wedding ceremony took place on May 3 , 1882 in Steenwijk .
In the course of 12 years 6 children were born , three sons and - you already might have guessed ... - three daughters .
Some of these children would be lucky to finally reach high ages in life (one daughter would even live for 96 years !) , but two of their children wouldn't be that lucky : they would even pass away a long time befóre both of their parents ...

Just a year after the birth of his last child , father and husband Jan ten Wolde would make a very important decision , possibly the most important decision he had ever made during his lifetime , by following his adventurous nature so to speak : he left Holland on September 22 , 1896 and emigrated to South Africa , to the province of Transvaal ...
It was planned that at first he would go all by himself , thus leaving behind in the Netherlands for some period of time his wife and all of his children , in order to explore the situation in South Africa , to find out when and where exactly he could send for his family in Holland , so that they all could start a new and hopefully better life over there at the other side of the globe , bút it would never ever come to this ....
Because of serious health problems (Jan must have suffered from bronchitis) he was forced to return to his homeland , where he came back on August 18 , 1897 , after an absence of almost a year , with an experience that can be described as a complete deception ......
Though health problems had been his spoil-sport , they didn't prevent him of reaching a high age : Jan ten Wolde finally died on the last day of the year 1940 , the first year of occupation of the country of the Netherlands , after having reached the age of 86 - his wife Jantje Zwolle would pass away more than nine years later , aged 93 !

JANTJE ZWOLLE  (1857 - 1950)

The life of  JANTJE ZWOLLE , daughter of ROLOF ZWOLLE and GEERTJE PIEST (in the Dutch language 'piest' literally means : 'makes water ...') was remarkably long , taking into consideration that she was born in the middle of the 19th century in a poor , possibly very poor family and environment ...
Jantje Zwolle was the second child out of a total of five children , all born in the  village of Steenwijkerwold in the Netherlands , in the province of Overijssel .
It certainly wasn't  a wealthy family Jantje had been born in , since she had to start her laborious life working as a maid-servant , at least until she met JAN TEN WOLDE , the man who became her husband , the man with whom she would have six children .
The protestant wedding had taken place on May 3 , 1882 in the town of Steenwijk , the place where also all of their children would see the light .

As a result of health problems on the side of husband Jan ten Wolde , their plans to emigrate to South Africa (Transvaal) had gone awry , and so they decided to 'emigrate' inside the country of the Netherlands :  the family moved to the big town of Enschedé , where they would spend most of their married life .

Two of their sons sadly died here in their early adult years , the other children however would all lead long lives , and so did husband and father Jan ten Wolde who would reach the age of 86 , ánd so did most certainly Jantje Zwolle herself : Jantje would finally pass away on February 5 , 1950 , at the good old age of 93 .....

ROELOF TEN WOLDE  (1884 - 1920)

#  Duo-picture of ROELOF TEN WOLDE as a young adult man .
Roelof was born on September 9 , 1884 , at half past five in the morning in the 'Gasthuispoort' in the small town of Steenwijk in the province of Overijssel in the country of the Netherlands .
He saw the light in a protestant Dutch family as the second child of JAN TEN WOLDE and JANTJE ZWOLLE .
After Roelof four more children would be born within this family .

The family moved from Steenwijk to the earstern town of Enschedé , where Roelof found work as an office-clerk , ánd where he would find his bride-to-be !
On August 12 , 1911 the protestant marriage took place between ROELOF TEN WOLDE and JOHANNA DALENOORD   - Johanna was born on April 11 , 1890 in Enschedé , she was the daughter of ENGBERT DALENOORD and JANNA ROBERS .
The marriage was blessed with the birth of two children , a son in 1912 , named JAN TEN WOLDE and a daughter , in the year 1916 , named JANNA ENGBERTINE TEN WOLDE .
But then , in the course of the year 1920 fate would strike very deeply .......
After an illness of short duration , of nothing more than a few days , the life of husband and father Roelof ten Wolde would already come to its final end :  on May 7 , 1920 , around half past ten in the morning in his hometown Enschedé (at 'Kottendijk')  Roelof died at the young age of just 35 ...
Roelof was buried at the 'Oosterbegraafplaats' in Enschedé .

As far as we know his daughter Janna Engbertine is still alive and still únmarried , and how about his son Jan ??
We know that his son had passed away in the year 1982 at the age of 70 , and we also know that Jan had been married for three times , with all together about  t e n  children ánd numerous grandchildren .... so that we may very well conclude now that the genes of Roelof and Johanna most certainly hadn't got lost over the years .....

Johanna Dalenoord , the wife of Roelof ten Wolde , had remarried in the year 1921 and had two more children of that marriage .
Roelof , her first husband , didn't get any older than 35 , whereas Johanna Dalenoord departed this life in the year 1983 at the age of 92 ......

ALBERTUS TEN WOLDE  (1886 - 1918)

ALBERTUS TEN WOLDE  was the third son of JAN TEN WOLDE and JANTJE ZWOLLE .
Albertus was born in the month of October in the year 1886 , and to be precise : at eleven o'clock in the morning in the 'Gasthuispoort' in the small town of Steenwijk in the Netherlands .
His parents moved to Enschedé one day , and so did young Albertus of course , and in Enschedé he started working as a carpenter ('modelmaker') , ánd in Enschedé he came across a young woman , and , yes indeed , this woman was bound to become his wife   :   ALBERTUS TEN WOLDE and CAROLINA GERMERAAD  were joined in matrimony in their common dwelling-town Enschedé on August 7th 1913 .

Their marriage wouldn't last very long .......

After five years and two days of marriage the life of Albertus ten Wolde already came to a definitive end :  Albertus died on August 9 , 1918 in Enschedé (at 'Parkweg') at the still very young age of 31 ..... and it must have been a painful and terrible death , since his illness should have been diagnosed as Spanish flu .......

Nothing more than three years later the life of his widow Carolina Germeraad came to its final end as well :  Carolina passed away on October 2 , 1921 in Enschedé , after having reached the age of 33 .

There hadn't been any children born of this marriage ......

CAROLINA GERMERAAD  (1887 - 1921)

#  The course of life of CAROLINA GERMERAAD would be both short and sad .
Carolina , protestant by birth , was born in Wonseradeel , a small community in the northern province of Friesland in the Netherlands , on October 30 , 1887 .
She was the daughter of HANS WILLEM GERMERAAD and of ANTJE ALGERA .
At the age of 14 Carolina lost her father , and three years later Carolina was an orphan already : Carolina's mother Antje died on July 29 , 1905 .

Carolina started to work as a factory-worker , and then , one day , she came across ALBERTUS TEN WOLDE in her new hometown Enschedé (which is situated all the way in the eastern part of the country) , they fell in love and some time later they said yes in the town hall of their dwelling-place Enschedé , on August 7 , 1913 .

A long , fruitful and happy life as a married couple wasn't in store for them alas ....

After five years of marriage Carolina's husband Albertus ten Wolde died a terrible death as a result of Spanish flu .....

And how about Carolina herself ??
Was it some other illness or was it perhaps sorrow , grief or pain that must have tormented her soul ....??
We don't know , we just know for sure that three years after the early demise of Albertus , the rather pitiable life of Carolina (suddenly) stopped , on October 2nd 1921 , just a few weeks before her 34th birthday ......

In the five years that Carolina and Albertus had been married no children had been born from the marriage ...
