ZACHARIAS' TREE (ENG)
Z A C H A R I A S
* This side-branch of our family-pedigree owes its name to
brother of our very JACOB JACOBSE .
* The Zacharias - branch consist of about six generations .
By the start of the 20th century our familyname would vanish forever out of this Z-branch .
Bút up to this day there are still descendants , with all kinds of familynames , descending from Zacharias and his wife .
* Founder ( if we may use this phrase ) of the Zacharias - branch was Zacharias Jacobse , who must have been born somewhere round the year 1680 in ( it definitely can't have been anywhere else ) .......DE GROUW / DE GROUVV . We know by now that this was a place in the southern part of the province of Zeeland : GROEDE .
Zacharias came to live in Dirksland and was later called :
Zacharias van der Groef .
On may 18 , 1704 he married in his dwelling place DirkslandNeeltje Rotte , baptized november 21th , 1683 in Dirksland .
Zacharias probably passed away in Dirksland , at any rate before the year 1722 , since in that year Zacharias' wife/widow got married to widower Jan Reijer Cornelisz. .
Neeltje probably died in the year 1731 in her hometown Dirksland .
Zacharias and Neeltje had six children < Z2a - Z2f >
Two of these children were later married .
The 6 children of Zacharias van der Groef and Neeltje Rotte < Z1 > :
Z 2a : Jacob van der Groef(1706 - 1762 , Dirksland) - sponsors in 1706 were Jacob Jakobsz. and Lena Leenders , our common 'ancient' ancestors ; Jacob married twice :
first marriage :Sijtje Janse Gestel , Dirksland , 1730 - four children .
second marriage :Hijltje Tuijnders , Dirksland , 1749 - five children .
Z 2b : Maetje van der Groef(1709 - before 1712 , Dirksland)
Z 2c : Maetje van der Groef(1711 - 1749 , Dirksland) married in the year 1736 in Dirksland Cornelis Simonsz. Poortvliet - five children .
Cornelis remarried twice : another nine(!) childtren were born of these latter two marriages .
>After the demise of the second wife of Cornelis , his children were forced to go to school in Dirksland ('op de Ring') - up to that moment these children were all illiterates ; so, now they were trained in reading , writing ánd in ciphering , although ciphering costed about six pennies extra a week !
Schoolteacher in Dirksland around the year 1750 was a certain Hendrik Schravelaar ; this man had a few additional jobs as well : besides his work as schoolteacher in Dirksland , Hendrik worked as an inspector of weights and measures , bread-weigher , rave-digger ánd as bell-ringer - all together for an income of 72 guilders per annum .......
Z 2d : Aren van der Groef( born in 1715 in Dirksland )
Z 2e : Grietje van der Groef( born in 1717 in Dirksland )
Z 2f : Leendert van der Groef( born in 1719 in Dirksland )
The 4 children of Jacob van der Groef and Sijtje Gestel < Z 2a> :
----- first marriage ----
Z 3a : Zacharias van der Groef( 1738 - 1790 , Dirksland ) married in Dirksland in 1769 Katalijntje Bot - Zacharias and Katalijntje had one child , well that's to say : according to the data we have found they had a child , but díd they really have a child ?? < see : Z4 ?>
Z 3b : Neeltje van der Groef( born and passed away in Dirksland in the year 1743 )
Z 3c : Neeltje van der Groef( born and passed away in Dirksland in the year 1745 )
Z 3d : Jannetje van der Groef, married Pieter van der Groef ! !
Pieter was a grandson of the brother of her grandfather < see DA 3f >
>> This was the first , bút nót the only Van der Groef - Van der Groef couple in our 'one and only , unmistakable , remarkable , exuberant , and once in a genealogical lifetime' history of the still on-going story of all those unique American and EuropeanVAN DER GROEF's !!!
The 5 children of Jacob van der Groef and Hijltje Tuijnders < Z 2a > :
---- second marriage -----
Z 3e : Geertje van der Groef( 1750 - before 1753 , Dirksland )
Z 3f : Geertje van der Groef( 1752 - 1796 , Dirksland ) married , nót , < 'for a change' > in extreme poverty , in the year 1780 in Dirksland Arend van Eeuwen .
Z 3g : Neeltje van der Groef( born and died in Dirksland in the year 1754 )
Z 3h : Aren van der Groef( 1757 - before 1760 , Dirksland )
Z 3i : Aren(t) van der Groef( 1759 - 1802 , Dirksland ) married twice :
first marriage :Elisabeth van der Made , in Dirksland in 1781
Aren and Elisabeth had four children .
second marriage : Pieternella van Beek , in Dirksland in 1800 .
* Aren(t) was buried in 1802 to the amount of SIX guilders , so certainly nót pro deo .
Child of Zacharias van der Groef < Z 3a> ??? :
Z4 ? : Maatje van der Groef, baptized in Dirksland in the year 1773 should have been , well at least according to her 'certificate of birth' , a child of Zacharias van der Groef , BUT in reality she was , most likely anyhow , a daughter of an óther Zacharias , namely : Zacharias Poortvliet , cousin of our Zacharias < so this explains the three questionmarks > .
The 4 children of Arent van der Groef and Elisabeth van der Made < Z 3i > :
Z 4a : Hijlke/Hyltje van der Groef( she was born in 1783 in Dirksland and died in that same year , in that same place , just sometime later)
Z 4b : Jacobus van der Groef( born in 1788 , past away before the year 1790 , Dirksland )
Z 4c : Jacobus van der Groef, born in 1789 in Dirksland , shortly after the outbreak of the French revolution - were his parents aware of the significance of this event .....?? Well , they had other , for them much more important and relevant things on their minds : their own private struggle for life ......
And what can we tell about the course of Jacobus' life ?
Jacobus probably died , alas , in the flower of his life in Middelharnis on the island of Goeree - Overflakkee , around his 21st birthday .
Z 4d : Dirk van der Groef( 1793 - 1870 , Dirksland ) , tailor by profession , married in 1825 in Dirksland Willemina Walraven - Dirk and Willemina had six children :
The 6 children of Dirk van der Groef and Willemina Walraven < Z4d > :
Z 5a : Aren van der Groef( 1826 - 1880 , Dirksland ) married Maria Struik in Dirksland in the year 1850 - both Aren as Maria were fieldworkers by profession - they had six children - the story of the course of their familylife is a very sad one < see : Z 6a - Z 6f > .
Z 5b : Gerrit van der Groef( 1828 - 1830 , Dirksland )
Z 5c : Elizabeth van der Groef( 1831 - 1858 , Dirksland )
Z 5d : Cornelia van der Groef, Cornelia's life was very short : she was born and passed away in Dirksland in the year 1837
Z 5e : Cornelia van der Groef( 1839 , Dirksland - 1887 , Delft ) , gave , at the age of 36 , birth to an illegitimate child , a son < Z 6g > ; she left Flakkee and went to Delft - there she married in the year 1886 Johannes Brouwer , but sadly died here already one year later .
Z 5f : Gerrit van der Groef, their last child , born may 9th 1846 in Dirksland , would turn out to become some sort of gay dog , if we are allowed to depict him in such a way in retrospect .......
Gerrit , just like his father tailor by profession , lived in all kinds of places in the Netherlands .
On accout of "fysical defects" he didn't have to enter the service .
In 1869 in Nieuw - Helvoet , Gerrit marriedGeertruij Hooimeijer / Hooijmaaijer , (in poverty) - three children were born of this marriage .
After the birth of the third child Gerrit left his family , but was later summoned ,several times even , to attend before a court of justice . Finally , in the year 1882 , in the city of Rotterdam , Gerrit and his wife Geertruij were divorced on account of adultery(!) on the part of Gerrit .
Gerrit passed on in the province of Zeeland before the year 1909 .
The 6 children of Aren van der Groef and Maria Struik < Z 5a > :
Z 6a : Dirk van der Groef, born and passed away in the year 1851 in Dirksland
> a year later , in Herkingen , a couple of twins were born :
Z 6b : Job van der Groef
Z 6c : Dirk van der Groef- both Job and Dirk regrettably died in the year in which they were born : 1852
Z 6d : Dirk van der Groef, the third Dirk already in this family , was born march 19th 1854 in Dirksland . Dirk was polder-labourer by profession .
He passed away on november 16th , 1922 in his hometown Dirksland , at the age of 68 - Dirk was never married .
Z 6e : Neeltje van der Groef, born in the year 1857 and passed away at the age of 16 in Dirksland in 1873
Z 6f : Elisabeth van der Groef( 1863 - 1864 , Dirksland )
> Out of the group of these six children , born in a period of twelve years , just ONE child reached adulthood , bút remained unmarried , so , by the end of hís life , there also came a final , very definitive end to this - once promising - side-branch of our common family tree .........
Son of Cornelia van der Groef < Z 5e > :
Z 6 g : Dirk van der Groef, born in Dirksland in 1875 , "transformed into" = became : Dirk Brouwer , in Delft from the day of the second of june ,1886 , the day of his mother's wedding to Johannes Brouwer , the man who became Dirk's stepfather - one year later Dirk already lost his mother .
The 3 children of Gerrit van der Groef and Geertrui Hooijmaaijer < Z 5f > :
Z 6h : Dirk Jacobus van der Groef< 1870 - 1871 , Rotterdam >
Z 6i : Wilhelmina Aagje van der Groef< 1872 - 1931 , Rotterdam > , charwoman by profession - Wilhelmina had ( severe?) health problems later in her life - always remained unmarried .
Z 6j : Elisabeth van der Groef, born in 1874 in a very small village on Goeree-Overflakkee , in Herkingen - was married twice :
her first marriage : toCornelis Siebe Visser , in Rotterdam in the year 1898 -
her second marriage : toJan Buitendijk , in Rotterdam in the year 1908 .
When Elisabeth married for the first time (1898) , her marriage-certificate reported :
"......Gerrit van der Groeff ( < = her father > the familyname is still frequently written with double F within this generation ) ....... whose profession , whereabouts or the fact whether he is still alive or not , is unknown ........."
>Out of the group of about 35 people all belonging to the Zacharias - branch of the family , 17 men and women did reach adulthood with certainty - the infant mortality - rate in this side-branch must have been around 50% - and out of this group of 17 people 13 men and women eventually got married .
t h a t 's a l l f o l k s !!!
as far as this brotherly and sisterly side - branch of the VDG - family is concerned , anyway ......
