JACOB'S TREE = OUR TREE (ENG)
1J A C O B
* Our imaginary genealogical journey back in time starts with : JACOB - His name is about all that we know about the existence , ever , of this very ancient ancestor of us all .
Jacob was the father of an óther Jacob whose familyname simply was : Jacobs(e) , meaning : son of Jacob - and with this second Jacob , so with Jacob Jacobse ,our written VDG - family history really commences......
DA 1 : JACOB JACOBSE
What can we tell about this 'illustrious' Jacob Jacobse ?
Our written history with regard to our familyname starts in the year 1696 .
In that year óur Jacob Jacobse married , on april 23 , in Dirksland :
LENA LEENDERTSE SOLDAAT .
On april 6 of that year this couple had given notice of their marriage .
Jacob was likely born round the year 1670 , but where exactly .....???
Their marriage-certificate , rather difficult to read and written in a somewhat hasty manner , is the first official piece of evidence of the history of descent of the entire Van Der Groef - family .
Jacob's wife Lena came , like allof her brothers and sisters , from Dirksland .
Hér past history is very well known to us .....* LENA LEENDERTSE SOLDAAT
Though we are unable yet to 'turn up' more 17th century VDG - descendants , we cán do so with regard to Jacob's spouse , our common ancestress Lene Leendertse Soldaat. Lena was baptized in Dirksland (october 14th , 1674) and must have passed away áfter december 28th 1726 .
She was one of the many children of Leendert Leendertse Soldaat and of Ariaentge ArensRose .
Soldaat means Soldier , so we may assume that the very first Soldaat Lena stemmed from , really was a soldier by profession .
Leendert Leendertse Soldaat was the son of another Leendert Leendertse Soldaat and of Jannetie Gerbrants - and this last Leendert was álso the son of a Leendert Leendertse Soldaat , the great-grandfather of Lena , who lived around the year 1600 and who was probably born and raised in Dirksland as well .
The ancestors of Lena came - as far as could be traced - from Dirksland , Ouddorp and from Bommenede (on an other island , in the province of Zeeland) .
The most ancient ancestor we could find wasHendrick , born around 1530 , possibly in Ouddorp , one of Lena's great-great-great-grandfathers ......
In the marriage-certificate Jacob's name is being described in the following manner :"Jacob Jacobse , j.m. (=jongeman / young man) van de Groúw" - a very important little sentence for us all !
In his certificate Jacob is simply called Jacob Jacobse (=son of Jacob) , but by the addition "j.m. van de Groúvv/Groúw" we are being informed about his previous whereabouts , namely : De Groúvv or De Groúw , later spelled : De Groef(f) .
Where can this place be found then ??
It was extremely difficult for us to locate this place somewhere in the Netherlands .
But after a long search our efforts were rewarded : we came across a place in the southern part of the province of Zeeland , not that far away from Belgium , on Zeeuws-Vlaanderen .
The name of the place is : Groede , nót so very similar to Groef , one might say ...
But .......Groede is also . unofficialy , known as ........De Grouw !
Knowing that around the year 1700 quite a lot of people emigrated from the province of Zeeland to Flakkee , to the place of Dirksland , we can state now that Jacob Jacobse , along with many others , relatives and non-relatives , should have come from the place of Groede / De Grouw , settled in Dirksland , and that he and all the others were called and referred to , from that moment on , as : Van de(r) Groúw / Groúvv ,which means : 'he or she , coming from de Grouw = Groede" .
In later generations Grouw / Grouvv was spelled : Groef(f) .
So now we know what our familyname means and where the very first namesakes of us all came from - and íf they had come from , let's say , Sint Anna ter Muiden ,we all might be called , nowadays , 'Van Sint Anna ter Muiden ....'
In the marriage-certificate of Jacob and Lena we can also read that Jacob and Lena lived in Dirksland , that their parents gave their consent for this marriage and that both Jacob and Lena were of age then .
Jacob van der Grouw / Groef probably passed away in Dirksland in 1738 or 1739 .
Jacob and Lena became the parents of 7 children < DA 2a - DA 2g > .
Six of their children reached adulthood , married and had children themselves .
In the certificate of birth of the only child that died young ( Leendert (1) ) , the name of father Jacob is : Jacob Jacobsz. .......Dosij !
So one could say that Jacob had (at least) three different familynames : Jacobse , Van der Groef and Dozij !
The literal meaning of Dosij / Dozij is something like : 'little box...?!'
The children of Lena and Jacob (starting with his eldest son Jacob) are the first ones in this , for us all , so very crucial branch of the family tree , who , consequently and without exception , all would be bearing the lastname of van der Groef , even though our familyname was still spelled very differently within this generation :van der Groef(f) , van der Groev , or even : de Groef(f) or de Groev and one or two times : van der Graef(f) .
The 7 children of Jacob van der Groef and Lena Soldaat :
DA 2a : Jacob Jacobse(1697 - after 1739) was the very first van der Groef spelled in this 'proper way' ; married twice : first marriage : Geertrui Hendr. van Wageninge(n) , two children ; second marriage : Cornelia Leend. Pa(a)ijs / Pajes - they married in Dirksland in 1732 and got two children .
Jacob and Cornelia are the ancestors of the later Nieuwe - Tonge - branch ('my branch') .
DA 2b : Adriaentje van der Groef(1699 - before 1735 , Dirksland ) married Reinier Arens van Essenburg in 1726 in Nijkerk (Gelderland) - Reinier and Adriaentje had four children - Adriaentje and her husband were buried , like so many other people in those days , and certainly also within our family , in poverty .....
Now we have reached the 18th century , a century of poverty (low income, about one guilder a day) , epidemics , high infant mortality and so on .The average man or woman reached an age of just about 40 years .
DA 2c : Leendert Dosij / Dozij(1702 - before 1706 , Dirksland) : Leendert (1) was the only child named Dosy/ Dozy , instead of Van der Groef .
DA 2d : Leendert van der Groef(1705 - 1772?) married Pieternella Pieterse Kievit in Dirksland in 1729 - eight children were born : no one of the now living Van der Groef's is a descendant of one of these children .
DA 2e : Zacharias van der Groef(1709 - 1763 , Dirksland) married in Dirksland in the year 1738 Maria Arens Bosvelt - seven children were born : their last born child , Adrianus , would become the founder (without knowing it himself...) of the almost complete Van der Groef - family : about nine out of ten of every now living VDG is a direct descendant of Adrianus .
How 'tiny and pitiful' would be the appearance of our familytree nowadays , íf Adrianus never ever could have reached adulthood and consequently ......you can fill in the rest ....
DA 2f : Grietje van der Groef(1713 - after 1750) married in 1740 in Dirksland Johannes Noorman - Grietje and Johannes had three children and anno 2000 there are still descendants , but nót with our familyname of course , of this couple , living in the Netherlands .
DA 2g : Maria van der Groef(1716 - 1770 , Dirksland) married Paulus Hubertus Nachtegael in Dirksland in 1738 - 8 children were born , 38 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchilden .....well, even more : the 65 great-grandchildren were 'just' the ones born and raised with the familyname of Nachtegael !!
The 2 children of Jacob van der Groef and Geertrui van Wageninge(n) <DA 2a> :
---Jacob's first marriage ---
DA 3a : Jacob van der Groefwas born in Dirksland in the year 1725 - Jacob probably died (very) young .
DA 3b : Arendje van der Groef: born in 1727 in Dirksland .
The 2 children of Jacob van der Groef and Cornelia Pa(a)ijs / Pajes <DA 2a> :
---Jacob's second marriage ---
Da 3c : Leendert van der Groef: born in 1733 - must have passed away before 1735 , Dirksland .
DA 3d : Leendert van der Groef, born in 1734 and died in 1807 , Dirksland - Leendert reached the age of (about) 73 years .In the year 1763 in Dirksland he married Elisabeth Langstra(e)te .

DA 3f : Pieter van der Groef(1733 - 1777 , Dirksland ) married : Jannetje van der Groef ! Jannetje belongs to the Zacharias - branch .
JACOB was the great-grandfather of them both .
Pieter and Jannetje had five children .
The interment of Pieter (in 1777) costed three guilders , so he ,"for a change" , wasn't buried in poverty - Pieter reached an age of about 44 years .
DA 3g : Maatje van der Groef(1735 - 1736 , Dirksland) .
DA 3h : Maatje van der Groef(1737 - 1770 , Dirksland) : Maatje (2) married in Dirksland in the year 1761 Pieter Aren van Pruissen / Prooyen - three children were born of this marriage .
DA 3i : Jacob van der Groef(1739 , Dirksland - 1796 , Middelharnis ) :
Jacob married three times :
1)Geertrui Filipse van der Mast , Dirksland , 1772 - one daughter .
2)Sara Isaacks Groenewegen , Dirksland , 1775 - one daughter .
3)Huijbertje Michielze van de Roovaardt , Middelharnis , 1786 - no children .
The winter of 1740 :
' The winter of 1740 just started rather pleasant...but became so very cold that many people were frozen to death in that awful year.....'
But , fortunately, this wasn't the fate of Leendert and Pieternella , so that we may proceed now with .....
DA 3j : Adrianus van der Groef(1741 , Dirksland - 1783 , Ouddorp) married , finally - since it looks as if he had to be 'persuaded' or even 'forced' (!) a little bit to enter into this marriage .... - in Ouddorp in 1771 Grietje Janse Tak ; the - possibly nót permanently madly in love - couple had all together six children ; unfortunately five of these children died at a very young age .
DA 3k : Leendert van der Groef(1744 - 1745 , Dirksland) .
DA 3l : Leendert van der Groef, born in the year 1746 ; also this second Leendert is likely to have died very young .
The 7 children of Zacharias van der Groef and Maria Bosvelt < DA 2d> :
DA 3m : Jacob van der Groef(1739 - 1740 , Dirksland)
DA 3n : Jacob van der Groef(1741 - 1789 , Dirksland) married in Dirksland
in 1767Jannetje Hendr. de Jong - Jacob and Jannetje got nine children , but .......
>by the end of 1784 an unknown horrible fate would strike most of these children - when Jacob died , no more than two of his children were still alive .
DA 3o : Arent van der Groef(1743 - 1808 , Dirksland) - Arent married twice : first marriage in Dirksland in the year 1769 to Agnita de Jong - the marriage was blessed with the birth of three children ; second marriage in Middelharnis in 1797 to Pietertje van der Waal .
>1743 : sunday december 8th : a strange comet is seen in the sky - what's going to happen ????
there's clamour and panic in the big cities !!!
but in Dirksland everyone stays calm and nothing really changes ...
....and , come to think of it , díd things ever change in Dirksland in those days .....???
DA 3p : Leendert van der Groef(1745 - 1780 , Dirksland) married in Dirksland in the year 1774 Beatris Bastiaanse van 't Oostende , and at the sáme day their daughter Maria was christened ....rather late, one might add......
three other children were born of this marriage in later years .
DA 3q : Maria van der Groef(1747 - 1749 , Dirksland)
DA 3r : Marinus van der Groef(1749 - 1810 , Dirksland) married in 1778 in Dirksland Cornelia Sierevelt - Cornelia was an official member of the protestant church of Dirksland , as was almost everyone else in Dirksland , certainly in the 18th and 19th century - Marinus and Cornelia had five children .
DA 3s : Adrianus van der Groef, born in 1750 in Dirksland , married in Dirksland in 1773 Annetje van Putten .
The marriage of this couple is of the utmost significance and importance to almost every now living Van der Groef : five sons were born in the course of their marriage and three of them would become the ancestors of three very important branches of our family tree - without Adrianus and Annetje 'just a handful' of us namesakes could ever have had the opportunity to experience life ........

DA 5b : Kommertje van der Groef(1799 - 1852 , Ouddorp)
Kommertje too was born out of wedlock : her mother's name was Aagje Pieters. Heerschap , but since Kommertje's familyname was Van der Groef , her biological father Leendert van der Groef must have recognized her as his own daughter - but just six days before the baptism of Kommertje , Leendert already tragically and sadly passed away.
And now , with the life of Kommertje , history seems to repeat itself : Kommertje tóó became the mother of an illegitimate child <DA 6a> .
Some weeks after the birth of this child she married in her hometown Ouddorp in 1821Jan Heerschap .

...well , we máy assume that some clerc made a rather huge mistake in writing here.....
The last thing we know about the life of Leendert is that he had been a soldier for several years .
Child of Bastiaan van der Groef <DA 4ac> :
DA 5e : "child of Bastiaan van der Groef ", buried in 1795 in Dirksland
Only child of Zacharias van der Groef and Klazina Groen <DA 4ah>:
DA 5f : Zacharias van der Groef: Zacharias , named after his deceased father , was born in Oud-Beierland in 1810 and passed away there just three months later .
Child of Kommertje van der Groef <DA 5b> :
DA 6a : 'lifeless child': on september 6 , 1821 Kommertje van der Groef gave birth in Ouddorp to a "lifeless child of the female sexe".
> Now we have come to the end of our Dirksland A - branch .
> In the group of namesakes , men , women and children - all together about 70 people - belonging to the first generation of VDG-representatives of our extensive Dirksland-branch , there are with certainty 32 persons who reached adulthood and out of this group of 32 persons , 29 married sooner or later .
The infant mortality-rate within this first Dirksland-branch was - like within the Zacharias-branch - around 50% , possibly even higher , a very sorowful finding .
But......this certainly dídn't mean that the engine was completely taken away out of our Dirksland-branch , because .......via the Nieuwe-Tonge - branch and in particular via the Dirksland B-branch and all the later sidebranches from the latter , our Dirksland-branch would certainly proove its vitality and resilience for centuries ..........for us , distant descendants of that branch , of immense importance and of vital interest indeed .......
